China: Massacre on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Thousands dead.
Iran: Ayatollah Khomeini dies. Billions rejoice.
Russia (then the USSR): gigantic train wreck triggered by a ruptured gas pipeline. 190 dead, mostly children.
